Are You Responding or Reacting?

Tuesday was a bad day.  Wednesday was a great day.  

On Tuesday, everything went wrong.  Everything I did was wrong.  It was one of those days where you wish you had just stayed in bed.

On Wednesday, everything went right.  I could do no wrong.  It was one of those days where you feel like a rock star!

How could one day be so awful and the next day be so awesome?  I reflected on this for some time and came up with the answer…on Tuesday I REACTED and on Wednesday I RESPONDED.

My boss and mentor knows my type A personality is both a blessing and curse.  He is always reminding me to respond to problems or situations…not to react.  Responding is so much more intentional than reacting.  

My bad day was filled with me reacting to everything thrown my way.  I never took a step back to think… to pause…to breath…I just reacted.  This led to a day riddled with chaos and disappointment.

I made the choice on Wednesday, to not repeat the mistake from the day before.  So I responded to situations with thought and never once just reacted.  My day was so much more productive and I was much more successful.

Of course we will never be able to completely avoid bad days…but I am going to try and remember the importance of RESPONDING more and REACTING less.
