Judging the Character of your Employees

When it comes to your employees, are you a good judge of character?

Here are a few tips to remember when hiring your team:

Listen to what your employees are saying.  To understand someone you must know when to talk and when to listen…Listening can be a key character assessment.

  • Actions speak louder than words.  Watch what your employees do, judge by performance not by what they say they will do/have done.
  • Give someone the benefit of the doubt.  It can be difficult at times, but trust that there is good in everyone.
  • Find out about their past.  Understanding where they came from and what they have been through can tell you a lot about a person’s true nature.
  • Watch how they treat co-workers.
  • Watch how they treat strangers.  Servers, Taxi Drivers, Admin employees, etc.
  • Are they optimistic?  You want someone on your team who will bring you and others up….not Not someone who is going to negatively affect the team.  It is much easier to be brought down than it is to bring another up.
  • Trust yourself.  9 times out of 10 you are correct, trust your gut instinct!
  • Try following these few pointers when hiring and managing your team.  You want those with high ethics and optimistic outlooks; it will boost team morale and make for an overall more enjoyable workplace!
